She was born in East Orange, Essex County, New Jersey on 23 September 1871. She was the daughter of William Wiley and Joanna Clarke. Her father was an American Republican party politician as well as co-founder and former president of the publishing company John Wiley & Sons, which published works by authors such as Cooper, Emerson, Melville, and Poe
