Short biography

Giannina Mili was a poet (Teramo 1825-Firenze 1888). From a very young age she showed a great propensity for literary studies, in which she was taught by Stefano de Martinis, a poet and literary scholar also from Teramo. She began to exhibit her work in public in her hometown in 1847, her success in this endeavour helped to establish her reputation as a poet. She would improvise on themes put forward by the audience, and she would also compose patriotic verses through which she glorified the unification of Italy. Between 1850 and 1860 she travelled around Italy, frequenting various literary spaces??, making contact with Manzoni, De Sanctis, Villari, Parti, Settembrini. In 1865 she was appointed school inspector for Naples and Puglia by the Ministry of Education and in 1872 she was called to Rome to direct the newly established Scuola normale femminile per la formazione delle maestre. In 1876 she married the school inspector Ferdinando Cassone and left her job to be follow her husband on his travels. After the death of the latter(Once the travels had finished), she returned to Florence where she spent the last years of her life. She left behind a substantial and interesting correspondence and numerous poems.

Mostrò fin da giovanissima una grande predisposizione per gli studi letterari nei quali fu guidata da Stefano de Martinis, poeta e letterato teramano. Cominciò a esibirsi in pubblico nel 1847 nella sua città natale e il grande successo ottenuto contribuì a creare la sua fama di poetessa. Improvvisava su temi proposti dal pubblico ma componeva anche versi patriottici in cui esaltava l’unità d’Italia. Tra il 1850 e il 1860 viaggiò per l’Italia frequentando diversi salotti letterari ed entrò in contatto con Manzoni, De Sanctis, Villari, Prati, Settembrini. Nel 1865 fu nominata dal ministero della Pubblica istruzione ispettrice scolastica per Napoli e le Puglie e nel 1872 fu chiamata a Roma a dirigere la Scuola normale femminile per la formazione delle maestre da poco costituita. Nel 1876 sposò Ferdinando Cassone, ispettore scolastico, e lasciò l’incarico per poter così seguire il marito nei suoi spostamenti. Dopo la morte di questi, si ritirò a Firenze dove trascorse gli ultimi anni di vita.
