Short biography

Caterina Pignori Beri was born in Fontanellato, Parma in 1845 and died in Rome on the 26th of March 1924. She was a self-taught author, beginning her career as a teacher in the girls’ school of San Paolo in Macerata, and later becoming the head of the Regia Scuole normale in Camerino.
Her works dealt with a myriad of themes, for example, literature, history, morals, art, and politics often appeared in her novels, novellas, and profiles. However, she is best remembered for her works on folklore, particularly the volumes “Costumi e superstizioni dell’Appennino marchigiano” (Castello 1889) and “In Calabria” (Torino 1892). These volumes explored the customs, traditions, and popular beliefs of Italy, with the former focusing on the Marche region and the latter on Calabria. Her descriptions within these works vividly brought to life the rich and colourful customs of the regions. This resulted in her being awarded a prize by the Italian Society of Anthropology and Ethnology in Florence in 1899, as part of a competition for the best monograph on popular superstitions in Italy.

Autodidatta, fu insegnante nelle Scuole femminili di S. Paolo, di Macerata, poi (1870) direttrice della R. Scuola normale di Camerino.
Si occupò di letteratura, di storia, di morale, di arte, di politica; lasciò novelle, romanzi, profili; ma il suo nome è durevolmente affidato soprattutto ai lavori di folklore e specialmente ai volumi Costumi e superstizioni dell'Appennino marchigiano (Città di Castello 1889) e In Calabria (Torino 1892), nei quali la P.B. descrive con molta ricchezza e vivacità di colore le costumanze popolari di quelle regioni. Per questa sua attività meritò nel 1899 il premio della Società italiana di antropologia e di etnologia di Firenze, nel concorso per una monografia sulle superstizioni popolari in Italia. | C.
